I had the same problem with sleeping...my doctor suggested trying a nice warm bath or cup of tea before going to bed. It helped some nights.
An epidural is when they insert a catheter into your back along the spine in order to numb the pain from the contractions. You will have the catheter sticking out of your back with tubing attatched, this is how they feed the medication in. It doesn't really hurt for them to do it just feels like a pinch when they put it in. Some people have real problems with epidurals if the doctor that is putting it in isn't experienced enough then they can put them in the wrong place or pinch a nerve when doing the procedure and it can cause severe headaches and alot of back pain. I had an epidural when I had both of my kids. The first one worked great...no problems. Then when I had the second one I ended up having headaches for 3 weeks and my back was very tender for a few months. But that is just my experience. Congratulations and Good Luck on whatever you decide.

All of the info so far is just about right except, not everyone has back problems associated with an epidural..they say you have back problems just by giving birth. Some very fortunate women don't experience back pain at all, with or without an epidural...lucky!! I've had a Spinal Tap to test fluid from my spine/brain and i've never experienced chronic back pain...and that's even worse than having an epidural! Good luck!

Your not the only one with this problem. I'm at 5 weeks and I wake up at least 4-5 times a night. I've even tried not taking naps during the day but it just makes me more tired. I hope it will pass. Just hang in there

I had a problem staying awake when I got pregnant. Could be you need to eat or use the bathroom.
Epidural is a shot/iv they put into your spine to reduce the feeling of contractions. I went natural with 3 babys, never thought of getting one. There are only certain points in labor that they will give it. They do have other less talked of methods to use that also lessen the pain from contractions.
In any event your doctor can help you come up with a birthing plan.

take tylenole pm, once you hit 12 weeks, you shouldnt take anything in your first trimester, less likely to have miscarraige and promblems with baby. tylenole is one of the few meds you can take while pregnant. if your problem persists diring your pregnancy you should talk to the dr and he may give you something to help, like ambien
epidural is a local anethesisa that goes into your back, it kinda hurts feels like a bee sting, but then you cannot feel the contractions, however in some cases the epidural doesnt work or only works on one side, and also everyone i know including me have back problems from it, like the back locks up after words anywhere from weeks to months and even years after the epi, so good luck on your descion

Sista girl you can forget sleep now for the next 20yrs or until the child is out of the house and on its own. A epidural is a drug they give you during labor to ease your pain. Try to go it natural. Women have been giving birth since the beginning of time. Relax you'll be fine

Talk to your doctor about taking something for sleep. Insommnia is hormonal and i had it through my entire pregnancy.
The epi really does work - I did'nt feel a thing until it wore off and it was time to push. Talk to your doctor and take a birthing class so you have the info for all your decisions.
