certainly. religion has always been used as a political tool. since the times of pharoahs. it is being used today as we speak in all corners of the world...from the U.S to afganistan...from sumalia to turkey....etc i think religion has done its part in ancient society and i think its about time to settle our religious deifferences, put them aside (separation of state and religion), and act, behaive, and conduct ourselves with rationality, instictive morals and reason. maybe we'll finally acomplish/create what Plato wrote about......UTOPIA!

yes - it would seem that way. With the exception of Bhuddaism, most of the known religions have condoned the killing of innocents in it's name - I, for one, find it appalling that anybody still wants to support these organisations, for various reasons. I think that there is nothing wrong with having beliefs, whether you be Muslim/Christian/Jedi or whatever else takes your fancy, but to kill people and then justify it by stating it is in the name of Allah/God or whoever else, is just hiding behind the fact that you are a murderer and obviously are ashamed to wear the label but proud to commit.
If you check the history books, humans who claim to be 'men of religion', have killed and maimed for their cause, I don't believe that any superior being (God/Allah) would want mankind to kill each other in it's name and it is the twisted way that each organisation interprets the written word (Bible/Koran) for their own advantage to justify their evil doings that is the problem.
When will we ever learn?
I feel ashamed to be human sometimes with the atrocities that are being committed around the World right now - it's not because I am a Christian, Muslim, Jew, white, black or indifferent, it is because I am a human being and the events that the World is suffering right now are not acceptable to anyone with an ounce of common sense.

I think it would help the debate if people actually found out about other religions first, islam in particular.

eg relying on Ayatollah Bush, Blair and the Pope for information about islam is obviously going to lead to a one-sided debate.

Yes, the primary purpose of organized religion is to control the populace, with a secondary reason of taking away their money. It has been this way throughout history. Just go to your library and read.
