Are you talking about John Boorman's film? Excalibur is the sword that Arthur pulls from the stone; this means that he is the rightful king. The sword has magical powers. At the end of Arthur's life the sword is returned to the lady of the lake. The conflicts in the film are between good & evil; between Arthur & Morgana & later between Arthur & his son. Guinevere's love for Lancalot destroys the fellowship of the Round Table. There is also conflict between the older pagan beliefs of the priestesses of Avalon & christianity. This film is a wonderful version of the legend. Read 'The Mists of Avalon' by Marion Zimmer Bradley - this tells the story from the viewpoint of the women.

Well, Arthur was a page for a knight, when he was a baby Merlin dropped him off at this knights house for safety, no one new . Excalibur was thrust into a stone by Arthur's father and it was said whoever pulled it out would be king. The land went without a king for years and found itself in a lot of internal fighting. They held annual matches where the winner had a chance to pull out the sword, Arthur pulled Excalibur out by accident and many of the leaders did not recognize him as king, but he went on to win these small conflicts and built Camelot. Once and future king is a tough read, but that is the gist of it especially the first half.

Excalibur would refer to the sword that gave power to King Arthur of Camelot, so that movie would be about King Arthur in some way or another...
