I, along with the majority, usually answer with the stock reply 'fine thanks' and not with 'well, now you ask, actually I am feeling like absolute rubbish - partner has left me 'holding the 5 month old baby' and has shacked up with naive French bird who obviously bonks like a rabbit, the mortgage I applied for and thought I had has just been refused as the lender 'sent the wrong papers', I got made redundant from a job I had 20 years and have a house and child to support financially, oh and to top it all, I get around 4 and a half hours sleep a night' hhmmmmmmmmm, think 'fine thanks' covers that just fine - don't you? :-)

Well I usually am doing fine so thats what I usually say.
If I'm not ok then I just say could be better.
I hate it when you ask someone this and get there life story straight away, makes me wish I'd never asked, unless of course, I am genuinely interested in how that person is doing.

Living in the US where people ask you this dozens of times a day without expecting a genuine answer I've got into the habit of automatically responding 'good thanks how are you' in a really mechanical way. Doesn't go down to well now I'm in the UK and I get asked by my friends and family expecting a genuine answer.
Usually ends up going something like 'good thanks how are...actually I'm having a bit of a crap day to be honest'

It depends on who's asking the question. If it's a close friend or family you would open up a bit. If it's an acquaintance in the street you would say just fine.

How you doing?

Depends on the person. Generally it is a "I can't complain". If it is someone who actually wants an answer, then I give them the details.

It all depends on who the person was that asked. If it's someone that's a good friend of mine, I tell them the truth, but if it's someone I'm not really close to, I'll tell them "fine thanks".

It depends on the person, if it's my best friend i will always be honest because if there's something bothering me or exciting going on, I'm always going to want her to know.
But, no one else wants to hear about your ups and downs they just want to be polite so i say 'fine thanks'. It's what they actually want to hear.

for some people saying "how are u" or " how are u doing" comes naturally like saying hello.. they don't really expect an answer because they just said that to be polite...honestly, who has time or who cares nowadays about others to actually listen? maybe just a few close friends.... sad sad world we're living in...
