this is a very difficult question as there so many great indians with so many wonderful achievements.but my opinion is rabindranath tagore - the first noble laureate in india,writer of the indian national anthem, establisher of shantiniketan, a great educator and overall a great person.

Are we talking outside the Indian subcontinent?
I only ask as that would mean that I discount film stars like Amitabh B....
OK if that holds good, then for my money it is Mahatma Ghandi for the men and (honoury Indian) Sister Teresa of Calcutta for the women.
I suspect a few cricketers might come close of course....

Mother Teresa. So powerful that so many heads of states venerated her and attended her funeral - One of the rare persons who was not a politician and still received a full state funeral by the Indian Govt. normally given to Presidents and Prime Ministers (just in case you think she was not an Indian)
