You need to decide:
. what your business will do.
. on a name.
You need to:
. carry out a feasability study.
. write a business plan.
. work out who your competitors are, find out what they charge.
. test the market.
. advertise as much as possible.
If you can, start working for your self while you've still got a job, build up a client base, and then launch into the big wide world.
Take advantage of free adverts in the yellow pages, yell.com and thompson local, you'll be able to find all the details you need online.
Build yourself a website, even a basic one, and run searches on yahoo and google regularly clicking on your link will move it up the list. Get your friends and family to run the search too.
Offer a loyalty discount for repeat business or introducing a friend or relative, this will boost your custom.
Be flexible if a customer wants the work doing on a Sunday, do it on a Sunday, they remember the flexability and small gestures like sending flowers/chocolates to your first customer as these small gestures will do your reputation a world of good.
Offer a free consultation, where you go out and advise the customer on the work, let them know you understand where they are coming from and that you are professional.
Follow up free consultations, with quotes and a phone call after the work is complete to check on satisfaction.
Be 100% customer focused, they are not always right, but they always belive they are right, with your experience, you'll be able to guide them and empower them to choose you as their prefered choice of business.
After more than fours years of working for myself I'm still working more than 60 hours a week.
Being self employed is the best thing I ever did, but it is hard work, constantly adapting my services to meet my customers needs, marketing the business and the different aspects of the business to the different sectors we service, and then the paper-work and travelling time.
I hope that in four years time my business is even stronger than it is now and that my services are the first choice of a much wider audience.

Depends what sort of business you want to start, if it is retailing something, you need to think what you want to retail and then get out there amongst the public and see if there is a need for what you want to sell then you would need to think about how you will sell , could be from home via the Internet, retail unit or market stall
You will need to find wholesalers etc and of course you will need to have some money to do all this.
But if it is not retail then the best place to go is to your local job centre and they will put you in touch with a business adviser.
All the best to you in what you decide and i hope you will be very successful

Think about what your interests are and what you are already passionate about - for example if you are creative you might want to start with making things for a market stall or through a website.
There are normally two types of people who aspire to owning their own business - those who have an idea but don't know how to make it happen. Or those who want to own a business and need an idea. Sometimes networking can match these types of people together!

The following are steps that you must take when starting new business:
1) Choose your Business Name
2) Create Business Plan
3) Choose Business Structure..
The following table will help you to make a decision about business structure: http://www.blquest.biz/business_structure.htm
DBA is the cheapest one. But it is the worst way to save money. In taxes and liabilities you will pay more down the road. Partnership is another disastrous option. Chose between LLC or Corporation. Your CPA can help you with decision (in relation to taxes).
4) Apply for Employer ID Numbers (EIN) with IRS.
5) Establish your business credit:
•Request a D-U-N-S Number with D&B registry
•Open physical location for your business (it can be your home office).
•Order business phone lines, fax line, 800 numbers and other communication tools
•Order business website and e-mail
•Obtain all necessary licenses
•Open business account with your bank. Try to have an average daily balance of at least $1,000
•Establish trade references. You can start with the business credit cards.
6) Apply for Identity Theft Protection with PPL. Having business without affordable legal assistance is an expancive option.
7) Enroll your business in Better Business Bureau after 6 months of existence.
Good luck,

you have 3 months from the time you initiate a enterprise to sign in as a sole dealer with HM Customs and Excise. which could be adequate time to initiate drumming up some purchasers, If on the tip of that era it hasn't provided you with any earnings you could purely end. on the different hand in case you have won any earnings in any respect from this source you're able to sign in and comprehensive a self assessment tax return for that tax twelve months. whether you want to call it an afternoon. it incredibly is the respected version. The unofficial version is which you will probable get away with it in case you earnt little or no and stopped and began over a short quantity of time
