Be careful with halogen bulbs.
Halogens are, in the periodic table of chemical elements: Flourine, Bromine, Chlorine and Iodine.

These bulbs have these gases instead of Argon in incandescent bulbs, where Argons are inert.

They give out low radiation and recent studies suggest that they can cause cataract in prolonged exposure. Go to source of my info: http://www.mayoclinic.com

That said, no they are tad more energy wasters than incandescent. But the new LCD lights coming on the market are way efficient in lighting and energy consumption. I am not referring to the curly bulbs. These new variety is catching on pretty quick. You will see Xmas 2006 will have more of these lights for decoration.

Many shopping malls and office buildings are slowly converting to LCDs.

look at the wattage rating on the bulb. for the size of the bulb they use mor energy than a conventional tungston bulb. but, like energy efficiant bulbs they give out more light. That said, where you may have had a light fitting with 1 bulb or flouresent tube, of you repace that with a new "trendy" halogen array i bet you put in more bulb units that you replace.

They are more efficient.

Tungsten, or any hot filament, light source will produce a range of electro-magnetic wavelengths, a normal distribution in fact.
A standard tungsten lamp is run cooler than a halogen lamp to maintain a reasonable life time, as a result the peak energy output is further from the visible part of the spectrum, wasting more energy as heat. A halogen lamp, since it is designed to work at higher temperatures can shift its peak energy output much nearer visible light, and so wasting less energy as heat.

Yes they do get very hot, don't they? And don't ever, ever touch the filament with your bare skin. The main advantages of halogen bulbs is that they give off more light and they do last longer. And now we have xenon bulbs. I have these in my car and they are even more fun than halogen. You cannot change these bulbs yourself but have to take the car to a garage to get them changed because if you don't handle them properly, they explode. Great fun!

They have a slightly better lumen/watt figure, but generate vast amounts of heat.
