President Kennedy gave a superb speech to American University a few months before he was killed, to the effect that we all shared the same planet, all had children and all had hopes for them ... Google for it (in case you're in any doubt, the location really was called American University ... that is, I'm trying to say that it wasn't 'an American University.'). I'd recommend that anyone get hold of Robert Kennedy's book 'Make Gentle the Life Of This World - it's a beautiful book of his notes, reflections, gleanings, thoughts, speeches, etc. You'll also find there the impromptu speech he made on the night that Martin Luther King was assassinated and riots were erupting everywhere ... except those to whom RFK addressed his words.
You could also recall Ed Murrow's final words in his programme on Joe McCarthy, now memorialised in George Clooney's film 'Good Night and Good Luck' - including phrases like 'we cannot defend freedom abroad by deserting it at home' - I might not have got that quite right, going from memory, but Google will turn it up, no problem.
You might like to look at www.wordsforiraq.com where there are some interesting poems, satires, and quotations reminding us of the better angels of our nature.

Check out the UN site. If Kofi Anan's International Day of Peace message for this year isn't posted yet, then go to last years.
It had me in tears!
I used it as the basis for a short peace play.
Wishing you Peace One Day At a Time.
