all those who are implying that you should get a new helmet aren't considering something important. The safety in a helmet is made up of two things. 1.. the protective shell, and 2. the styrofoam inside.

The weight of an empty helmet falling from a bike seat is unlikely to significantly damage the protective shell. they're pretty tough. But- certainly give it a good look.

secondly- unless there was something heavy or pointy inside the helmet when it fell, there will be no damage to the styrofoam.

True- the shock absorbing styrofoam in a helmet is designed be compressed just one time. After that- it doesn't work any more. So- if there is a chance that something damanged it, you should get a new helment. But- It's very unlikely that you've damaged this styrofoam by just dropping it 3 feet- so you should be just fine.

I think a lot of these posters just weren't thinking.

M.C.
"Does that imply MotorCycle ?", or some daft connection to "helmets"? I trust not - so >
Bit of a biker, myself, and after a bump with a car, down onto the fast road,(He was to blame in court), This expensive head-lid had its crack mended for a very small fraction of a new one. Duly sold.
It seems on the amount of damage, and, of course, the costs.
Matey the daft driver that rode ibto me had to pay up for a new Bell helmet. Serves him right, but I hear relatively minor repairs can be done to keep your nut safe.
Mind, I started off with an old "peanut" lid, eith leather sideflaps for your warmer lugs.
No, I am that not that old, but with goggles & a girlfriend, on an old Excelsior 325, it seemed the part.
Now, with the Valkerie, a more sensible approach.
Get the correct paint to fix a scratch or two, but if it is cracked, have a friendly word with the insurance folks. For a new one.

All the best of luck,
Bob

I would change it. When your helmet hits something the shell is designed to flex but the inside is designed like a crumple zone so you may well have a hollow dent underneath the shell. this means nothing to protect that area should you be in an accident.

Arai offer a free checking service for bounced helmets so it may be worth contacting the manufacturer if it's an expensive one. Otherwise just change it, it's really not worth the risk.

Tough one - you could ask a professional's advice but I suspect a shop is likely to recommend that you buy a new one (from them!) I would have thought the short drop to the pavement wouldn't be enough to damage the integrity of the helmet.

You know, really, it depends on what you have. I dropped my ScorpionEXO 400 off the rear view last week, and Scorpion stated to me that it's probably fine. You can check on the different DOT and SNELL sites to see what kind of tests they put your particular helmet through - usually, if it passes DOT and SNELL, you're in good shape from a little drop like that!

If you have a really expensive one, and you're leary of replacing it - because of the expense, you can arrange to send it in to your helmet manufacturer and they'll scan it for you to see if you need a new one.

helmets generally won't crack. The safety concern is - did it drop in a place and hard enough to compress the foam inside the shell?

If it's DOT and SNELL - and it just fell off your seat (about 2.5' to 3'), you're probably alright.

Hi there,

I work for a motorbike shop that sells helmets (not trying to sell you one). BUT yes you should buy a new one. Unfortunately you will not be able to see inside to see what damage has been caused and the price of a new lid is a small price to pay for your life.

Yes you should. Even a small fall onto concrete ruins a crash helmet. Buy a new one and save your head!

thats gonna depend a lot on the quality and make of the helmet in the first place.

If its some shitty £50 thing bin it. its £500 of Arai then you stand a pretty decent chance its perfectly fine, its true, you do pay for what you get in this case. You can get them tested for weaknesses so if your worried go do it. If in doubt, change it.

Look at it as an opportunity to buy that new helmet that you've been reading about. Buy a new one. Your head is worth a lot more.

I've done it... now I just rest my helmet on the ground... can't fall far from there.

You should get a new one, You can not see any damage done to the helmet under the outer skin.
If you read the paper work it tells you that if you drop your helmet that you should replace it .

Not worth the risk.
