Do your homework and find out everything you can about it - look at what chipset it has for the DA conversion (some are considerably better than others, and not always in the more expensive makes), things like that. An el-cheapo DVD Player from Tesco's will probably be perfectly OK for the average person who's not a home cinema mega-surround sound freak, so this DVD Recorder could just be the ticket for you. The quality of build and certain components will be inferior to the leading brands, but if it does you for five years then you're laughing.
PS The thing that usually goes wrong in these type of units is the hard drive, depending on manufacturer you may be able to get away with replacing it with a standard PC hard drive, but don't count on it. Check online forums to see what other people have said about it.

Don't be taken in by a brand name - even the biggest name in the market have their internal parts manufactured by lesser known Companies, or Companies you wouldn't associate with audio / visual products. So go for it and enjoy it.
By the way, picture quality depends on good signal strength, good connections and the recording mode of the HDD - the longer the length, the poorer the quality. And don't think you can just swap a HDD over, most are firmware driven and those that are compatable generally have to be re-initialised to that firmware.

Does it record HD?
No, that is why all this stuff is getting so cheap.
It will be useless in a couple of years. Looks like you are in the UK. I don't know about there, but in the States, everything is supposed to go HD in 2009

If your not bothered by the quality, go for it. However, spending the extra money is always worth while my dad has always said.
