Monopoly and scrabble are just too old/boring for me. Although there are some good versions: triopoly is a great version of monopoly with 3 different "levels" that you can play seperately or together or whatever. Higher level of strategy then just "buy everything" and hope you get lucky monopoly.
My #1: Apples to Apples is a great game. You have to figure out what each person would choose to be the match.
My #2: What were you thinking was great - but it is out of print. You have to choose answers that the most people picks. So if your answer is really good, but no one else thought of it - you move forward. This also makes it fun with kids, you have to think what would the kids come up with. The correct answer is not always useful. ONe question: name something you think of when thinking of Sleeping Beauty. The most thought of answer: Apple! But that was Snow White! It didn't matter. The goal was to match other people. Of course, you can play this game without even owning it, really.
My #3) I love the train games (like Empire Builder)- especially Iron Dragon - a fantasy version of building train tracks and delivering products. a little more advanced then Empire Builder.

I like the old ones that are simple to explain, but take a while to figure the strategy. I'd say Chinese Checkers has to be in there. The idea being that I want either pure skill, or just the right mix between skill and luck. That mix is what makes Monopoly almost everyone's favorite multiple-player game.

Settlers of Catan. A modern classic. Within board game playing circles this will be a long time favourite.

The best multiple player board game:
1. SCRABBLE
2. MONOPOLY
3. BOGGLE
These board games are the best because they increase your power of both property management and vocabulary.
