Look at the team in second place. Figure out what their record would be if they win ALL of their remaining games. Then look at the team in first place...determine how many games they must win in order to have a record that is 1 win better than second place team. That is your magic number.
Example:
OAKLAND 87-63
LA ANGELS 81-70
Since LA could finish the year at 92-70, then Oakland would then need to get to 93 wins to clinch the division. 93-87 = 6 MAGIC NUMBER.

Magic number = 163 - (no. of wins for the team in question) - (no. of losses for the next-best team)
So, for example, Detroit is now 90-61, Minnesota is 89-61, Chicago is 85-66. For Detroit to eliminate Chicago, the magic number is 163-90-66, or 7. For them to eliminate Minnesota, it's 163-90-61, or 12.

you have posted this under the wrong category, and that is why you forgot the answer to your own question. Brilliant! This is the American football category, NOT stinkin' baseball!
