Hahahaha! Yeah right…most of thier names end with a ho like ronaldinho???? No mate! They don’t have just one name but long ones… for example Ronaldo’s full name is: Ronaldo Luis Nazário de Lima, or pele is Edson Arantes do Nascimento, Ronaldhino is Ronaldo de Assis Moreira and so and so… and as for your question: the reporters just can’t say all this 4 word when the player has a chance for goal, I mean just try and say all tha tin a second! its borring and so it’s eassier to take just the first name: ronaldo!
p.s. what’s better:
Ronaldo, ronaldo – GOOOAL;
or
Ronadlo Luis Nazario de Lima – Goal???

Not only Brazilian players, but also players from all Portuguese-speaking countries, use "war names" instead of simply the name. Many time the war name is the first name, or the last name, or both. Sometimes its a nickname. It's a tradition. In Portuguese-speaking countries people call each other by the first name more.

The theory I like the best is the one I heard once on TV. When football was first introduced in Brazil in 1894 it was considered a peasants' sport and frowned upon so players used nicknames to hide their real identity.

According to Slate: Brazilians have nicknames for their sport stars, pop stars and politicians. Their current president Luis Ignacio da Silva is known as 'Lula'. Culturally it has become a sign of intimacy.

According to soccer expert Alex Bellos, One theory is that the nickname culture has it's roots in slavery which wasn't abolished until the 1888 they were given to slaves and used to distinguish slaves from free people.

Other experts in Brazilian history attribute this custom to Jews and Moors, when forced to convert to Christianity they were given a christian surname. They wanted to keep it secret within their communities so they introduced only with their first name.
