With kindness and acceptance, much as you would treat left-handed people or redheads. People are born gay becasue of the hormones in their mother when she is pregnant. Sexual orientation is simply one of those differences among humans and it's never a problem unless a culture makes a problem of it.

I have a friend who after about ten years I learned was gay. I had to do some real soul searching and I determined that changing my opinion was much better than losing a friend. Funny thing about that whole situation is that he didn't act gay in any way. Today I still consider him a great guy and a person that I trust, even though I don't approve of his lifestyle, I do approve of him as a person.

It is one of life's toughest questions, if you ask me. Bisexual men seem to do OK, but that's their own solution, and doesn't suit everyone. How does a man who is really securely heterosexual treat an out-of-closet gay? With a gentlemanly, polite reserve. I have been fortunate enough to see it done, as Steve was one of those. He used to joke with me about how unlikely it would be for him to experiment with homosexual activity with "nor Shetland ponies, either." Still, he was never rude to any gay person he met, and his reserve was just exactly enough to avoid a false come-on. Just exactly. Very much a "no problem that it's your thing, but it's not my thing" projection, without having to say a word on the subject. I never saw a gay man offended by it. Rather, they seemed to have a great deal of respect for his style.

You should treat everyone with respect and the way you would want to be treated. It's that simple.

Hopefully how they would treat any other human being they happen to meet on this planet - with respect.
