my rabbit keeps eating their plastic food containers even if there is food in it. what should I do? Is it bad for the rabbit or will the rabbit just poop it out? They also have a piece of wood to chew but they insist on chewing the plastic container. what should I do?

Yes, it's quite dangerous - the pieces of plastic MAY just pass through and out in their droppings, but it's also possible that they'll develop a stomach impaction, which can kill a rabbit - rabbits have the longest and most complex digestive system of any mammal, did you know. I'd definitely change to small glass or ceramic bowls - check out your local pet shop or pet food supplier - they make very heavy, small ceramic bowls, especially for small pets, so the small, heavy bowls are not easily tipped over, particularly good for their water bowls.

Best of luck to you and your bunns!

Wood can be bad for rabbits too. The splinters will block their intestines or block their throat. Does your rabbit actually eat his container or does he just like it 'cause it's hard. I've had a rabbit who liked to chew on small iron bars. His cage was open all the time but he went there to chew on the bars. That's something he can't really eat. It could also help if you had his teeth cut just a little. Maybe they are just too long. You can cut them yourself but first have a pet show you how to do it properly/

Enough plastic could block their bowels, I would start using a metal or glass feed container and watering from one of those external water bottles. Also, watch to make sure that there is no bowel problems in the future seeing that they have already digested some plastic.

It wont hurt them...rabbits are annoying like that. My rabbit wouldn't chew ANYTHING we bought for him , but he chewed the entire wood and plastic collapsible cutting board surfaces on both sides of my expensive BBQ (Untill they were literally dust!). Maybe the plastic has formaldehyde in it and preserves thier insides, because our healthy little buttmuncher lived till over 8 years old!

My rabbit used to chew the litter box, and we would have to get a new one every month, if you can't do anything, I don't think its a big deal, since he didn't die from that.

Give the rabbit a glass or stone bowl.

I'm assuming you mean their feeding bowls? If so get some ceramic bowls for them to feed from. If it's the containers you keep their food in, move it out of their reach.
