Low Earth orbit is the path any object, like a Soyuz or ISS, follows when it is above the atmosphere and going fast enough. One explanation is that centrifugal force balances gravity. A better explanation is that the Soyuz is always trying to fall back to Earth but it keeps missing the ground because of its high speed. Basically, the ground is curving away as fast as it falls. This is the "Newton's cannon" explanation.
