I have been through this and the one thing that was the most help to me was to join Alanon. Find a local chapter and go to the meetings. It will surely open your eyes and give you ways to cope and help.

I myself am in recovery and have been for a few 24 hours, The biggest thing is not to enable the person at all. If they are in a 12 step program be there for them and just try to do the next right thing yourself. If your friend or loved one is really doing the deal, you will soon see changes in that person and it will be then easy to support them. I have been clean and sober for almost two years, some of my family still won't talk to me. Hang in there, and don't get your hopes up. Threre is nothing that you can do this person has to WANT to do it.
