depends on which way you look at it, if you are looking for the scientific term for it, the proper terminology as the crest which is the highest part of a wave moves ahead of its supporting base, the act of the crest going over is the break, but the actual turbulent mass of water rushing shoreward is known as SURF yes surf. so now you know marine science is one of my classes I'm taking. best to stick to the scientific rout. but if you're looking for the terminology that surfers or Hawaiian surfers use its white wash. we've called it that while growing up in Hawaii.
