R.S.V.P. stands for a French phrase, "répondez, s'il vous plaît," which means "please reply." When you get this on a formal invitation card it is etiquette to reply the same day to the person/persons who invited you so that they may be prepared well in advanced for meals. It is important to reply promptly. It is considered impolite not to.
