I'm looking for burian records for an old Parish (may still exist I don't know, for family tree info) called Sampford Spiney which is near Exeter. I've tried what I already know 1837online etc etc but what I'm after is a specific listing of all the burials in a certain church graveyard. I've contacted Exeter council but they can't really suggest anything. Anyone have any idea?

You have an interesting challenge. Since you are in England (I’m in the United States) that you seek a historical group, possibly associated with a school. Here in the United States, all cemeteries are protected by a local council when located. I say “when located” because “lost” cemeteries are periodically found. These are most often family cemeteries.

Most of these cemeteries had a church which controlled them and maintained the burial records, but this is not an absolute. A historic group may be able to define what governmental authority was in charge of that particular locality at the time of the burials. If that can be discovered then it is likely the birth and death records of that time may yet exist and that should provide some idea of who was buried there and when.

Here in the United States we also have the Church of the Latter Day Saints who have extensive files on genealogy and they may have similar files where you are.

You may be facing a really tough job. Good Luck.

I'm not really sure where you could find these records, I joined Ancestry.co.uk but the records only show the parish of death, not the actual graveyard.

You could try going to the graveyard, but some places move the dead after about 100 years to make room for new graves, although the old gravestones are usually placed around the edge of the cemetary so it might still be worth a look.

Good Luck on your search.

Wow that is a tough one - is there an area Historical Society that may have some info. You probably already checked with the local churches. The only other place is the libraries. Good Luck - but half the fun in researching is when you find information.
