Or is it absurd that we, as people, rely on such documents to keep our god-given rights from being "taken away" in the first place?

It is sad that such a document is neccesary to keep this country from turning into a fascist dictatorship, but unfortunately it is...as you can see by the comments of the rightys here. There are brutal, violent, power-hungry, evil people in every nation, and unless we specifically make such a document law, they will murder everyone that does not agree with them.

The fact is, when people are ignorant, they become paranoid...they start thinking that everyone that is in any way different from thenselves is going to try to hurt them, so they lash out and try to do the hurting first, even though the people that they are lashing out at would not have done anything...it's just paranoia. That's why it's so dangerous to have a group like the ones currently running this country that spread fear and paranoia, promote ignorance, and ignore and try to abolish the Bill of Rights and other such laws that are there to protect everyone!

It's amazing to me how these "conservatives" can claim to be "patriotic Americans" while actively seeking to abolish everything that this country has ever stood for. They only want hate, violence, paranoia, death, destruction, tyrrany, the abolishment of democracy, the re-establishment of slavery, and the dissolving of all rights for everyone except themselves (except that they think that everyone that disagrees with them should have the right to "leave the country")

Well I think it's much better that we have a document as such to rely on rather than just have the good faith to hope our government doesn't do anything to violate our rights. I'm pretty sure you won't think this an acceptable answer but really, what kind of question is this?

The bill of rights was created do to the overwhelming lack of common sense and decency.

For example; a stop sign is for us to stop at because at an intersection no one has the common sense and or the decency to think about stopping with out that sign being there. Therefore, preventing the same thing that the sign does in the event of an on coming motorist That also should stop but doesn’t unless the sign is there.

Let's assume you are correct and there are God given rights. Then humans had these rights throughout history, correct? What kinds of governments did these God-given rights result in? Consider the time prior to the American Revolution. We had hereditary rule by nobles and monarchs. Monarchs said they were in power because God had appointed them. How? God had caused them to be born to a King and Queen. This was called the Divine Rule or Right of Kings.

The House of Commons was relatively powerless, and the American colonists didn't even have representation there. Colonists were 2nd class citizens who could be taxed totally against their will. They could be abducted and forced into the British navy. They could be imprisoned for free speech. They could be summarily judged and executed. This was all during a time when they had God-given rights, but no Constitution and no Bill of Rights.

Is this the way you'd like it?

No more absurd that relying on a document written thousands of years ago to dictate 'moral' behavior. Rules bring order, which would naturally evolve out of chaos. Helps the species survive.

The amendments to the constitution are many things, but absurd isn't one of them. The FFs knew business and contract law pretty well. They knew what 90% of modern citizens don't - get it in writing.

I believe the Bill of Rights were created with the best of intentions. I do not believe they are absurd. I just don't think that today's society allows us to use them the way they were intended to be used.

No, they are not absurd. They establish basic law. This helps people to live more peacably amongst each other.

They can be when the protect people for burning our flag and limit people from protecting themselves.

If we stomp around demanding our God-given rights...we become low and barbaric like Muslims...
- the only good thing about that is...we'll Nuke the dogsnot out of Iran and we WON'T rebuild them....just leave them flattened.

Unfortunately we abide by the rule of law ... that often times can seem absurd.
Which is why we have elected officials we can write protest letters to.

Stop being so selective. It is a god given right to use your lips, but it is also a god given right to use your brain.
