No harm in getting an xray done. You might have a hairline fracture. If not, it could just be the impact of the hard thing hitting you. Never take these things lightly ...so do go to a doc.

I broke my tailbone (confirmed by x-ray) 5 or 6 years ago and my symtoms sound exactly like yours - painful sitting and sometimes, even more painful getting up from sitting. I broke mine while picking up my nephew...he was standing and I bent down and he was a lot heavier than I expected. I fell back and my butt landed right on the ground. It didn't even hurt that much until later, just like you. Since this has been going on for 3 months, I would be surprised if it isn't broken. They don't do anything for it, it just has to heal on its own. Get a donut pillow, you can find them at drug stores, like Walgreens and CVS. Another note, the first x-ray I had said my tailbone wasn't broken. Then a few months later it was x-rayed again and they did see the fracture. Sometimes a small one can be very hard to spot. Also, I remember it hurting for a long time. It did better over time, but very slowly. Even now sometimes once in a great while it hurts if I sit a certain way or sometimes when I stand up. But now it's pretty rare. Even a year after it happened it bothered me occassionally...but not as much as it does now. Some people say it bothers them for years and years, some people not. Even thought doctors can't really do anything but treat the pain for a broken tailbone, you should go anyway and get some x-rays because there are cysts and things like that can cause your symptoms. But with your description of the injury it does sound like it is just broken. Good luck!

Sounds like you have bruised your tail bone. Sure you can go to the ER, but unfortunately there in nothing they can do about it...even if you have a hairline fracture. Your tailbone will have to heal on its on. For the time being you should carry a donut or pillow with you to sit on, that will ease some of the pain when sitting.

There isn't anything the ER can do for you other than give a better pain med than you can by in the store. In the mean time, ice it for 20 minutes on, 20 minutes each hour you're able to for the next 48 hours. Heat may feel better, but it can cause more damage that soon. Take ibuprofen (motrin, advil) every 4-6 hours. After 48 hours, you can use a heating pad on it.

If you don't go to the ER, then at least go to your regular doctor. A bruised tail bone isn't a big deal but it is painful. However, you really should find out if it's bruised, or cracked or broken.
Don't quote me on this, but it seems if it doesn't heal right, (with a crack or break), then later in life it could effect your posture which in turn could effect weight distribution and cause pressure on your hips and knees which in turn could damage your back.
Good Luck, I hope it's only bruised rather than broken or cracked.

Hi Ben, Think u have injured your tail bone or what is known as coccyx in medical terms. Although this is managed without any particular treatment, it would be wise to get seen in a/e or even by your GP and get an Xray taken to make sure you havent damaged anything else ( which probably u haven't) Also take approriate pain killers and some adequate rest.
