Try moving it. They usually work higher up. i have mine in a bedroom. The aerial (Antenna) can be changed. You can have a socket fitted on the router to an external aerial. It's a little like plugging a portable TV into a mast aerial - rather than using the loop aerial. the router transmits and receives and so another router positioned in a strategic place will act as a repeater and pick up the signal and re-send it. The aerial (antenna) is usually made to a very exacting length. An aerial exactly double the length and as a dipole will send out a really good signal. It can even be mounted on the top of your house like a TV aerial - although make sure your network is encrypted or you'll be sharing with all your neighbours! If like me you tend to use your laptop downstairs in a particular room - just moving the router to the bedroom over the top of your living room may do the trick. Remember, signals get shielded by metal too, so any metal sheeting between you and your router could interfere with the signal. Ask a technician, if you know one - if he can boost your signal - there are other ways - but a little too technical to attempt yourself.

It may look and sound stupid but making one of these really helps signal strength:

Another quicker easier method is to just get some aluminium foil and to wrap some around a piece of cardboard, Make it into a rough dish shape and wrap around the existing aerial on your router. It should increase signal strength a fair bit. Only really handy if you are doing it for one pc or all pc's are in the same direction from the router though.

Good luck.

You need to determine what may be causing interference to your signal.... Do you have other peoples signal on the same channel in your area? Switch it to one of the other channels 1, 6 or 11 to get away from the other users in your area.

If you have cordless phones that say they operate on 2.4GHz you may need to change their channel too or get rid of them for 5.8GHz phones.

Wall construction of the home/building can effect signal too. Concrete and metal inside walls will reduce the signal the more it has to go thru this type of material.

If your router accepts external antennas you may consider adding these, but that can be tricky if your not sure of radio setup. Using an external antenna could actually make things worse if setup wrong, and can be expensive if your unit has 2 antennas. You must change both antennas or your adding even more problems to the setup.

Check the simple things above like other users on your channel, 2.4GHz phones, microwaves nearby, and wall construction in your home/building.

Put the router in a place free from interference (ie not next to the microwave), the more wall the signal has to pass through the weaker the signal becomes.
You could also buy a wireless access point to extend the range.

Maybe try a booster antenna as this will increase signal strength. If you do a froogle search on wireless antenna booster you should see some options.
