In England (and USA I believe) owning your own house is seen as being really important. I hear that this is not the case in France, and that lots of people rent instead of buying - why is this?

And who owns all the properties that people rent, if most people rent?

Is this a continental Europe trend or just French?

Firstly, lets ignore the ignorant xenophobes before us..they clearly couldn't find France on a map with both hands and help, so we'll forgive them

Ok, to your question. Renting is a general European trend, us over here in the UK are considered the weird ones in the Union. The whole idea of 'An Englishmans home is his Castle' is, however, relatively new. For the majority of the 20th century, the Working Classes have always rented or bought their tennant slums, its a good fall back in times of crisis. Europe never had this mercantilistic economy liek we do, so their not as driven by the prospect of Money and Security.

Don't know about france but when you own a house in the US, you have property taxes running thousands, sometimes tens of thousands, a year.

If the house is a townhouse or part of a gated community, there are maintenance fees, minimum a few hundred a month.

Figure in the heating bills, in excess of $500 a month in the winter in Chicago, and the extended commute to work. With all these factors, even a paid off house isn't free.

maybe your source is speaking of Paris where places are hard to come by for sale, as in place in New York.
Homes are getting more and more expensive every where the dream (not just in America) is getting out of reach. The ones whoo own are people wh have had the place in their family for years, maybe rich that rob the average Joe by way of rent, then some people like to just rent not liking to stay in the same place long or just the trendy thing to do.

Maybe they just dont liek to settle
or they are too lazy to make an effort with Legal services.
Or tere wage could be so crap they can only afford to rent

There are many reasons for things which happen but no matter what things change with time, You never know it could be the oppasite way round in a few years
