why not fly directly to Bilbao? There are some airlines that offer this.
At the moment only British Airways / Iberia and Easyjet fly from the UK to Bilbao. British Airways and Iberia offer daily flights to Bilbao from Heathrow and Easyjet offer flights from Stansted to Bilbao.
It would probably easier to get a train to London than fly to Amsterdam.

Catch a train to London and then...
Try Easyjet directly from London (Stansted) to Bilbao
Or you could fly Bristol to Toulouse (and rent a car for the rest of the way...(Toulouse-Bilbao: 436 kms. about a 4 hour drive)
And there is also London (Luton) to Bordeaux (Bordeaux-Bilbao: 325 kms. drive in about 3 hours)
Then you have a direct RYANAIR flight from London (Stansted) to Santander-Bilbao (there's a bus from the airport that goes directly to the center of Bilbao (takes an hour and a half) Ryanair is also very cheap...

Beside flying directly to Bilbao ,you might consider flying directly to Toulouse (france) from there it's about 280 km to Bilbao.
You could rent a car there and drive for 2- 2,5 hours.
just a thought
