of course the answers here are the typical conservative "culture of DEATH" line.
Noone is saying that people that are convicted of murder should be let out of jail and handed an uzi. Noone in their right mind would ever even suggest such a thing. Only a complete ignoramus would even suggest that anyone actually thinks such nonsense!
Murderers should be securely seperated from the rest of society. However, the death penalty is both barbaric and hypocritical...it's no different than "screwing for virginity" to say that this person killed someone, so we are going to kill him to show him that killing is wrong! Duh. Life in prison works just fine, and isn't hypocritical, uncivilized, and brutally barbaric.
The death penalty in the US is probably the most barbaric out there! There are essentially 4 types in common use in the US...Lethal Injection, Gas Chamber, Electric Chair, and Firing Squad.
-The Firing Squad approach is the least used, but the most humane, as the shooting is done by sharpshooters, and the convict is dead before he feels anything.
-Lethal Injection has two steps...first a paralytic/analgesic that makes the person unable to move and semi-conscious, then the poison is injected which slowly over the course of a few minutes liquifys the convict's organs. It has been proven to be incredibly painful and lasts a rather long time.
-Gas Chamber is somewhat faster, but still an unpleasant and painful death.
-The Electric Chair is the most barbaric of all. The best that can be hoped for is that the high-voltage shock will kill the person in around 30 seconds, but it frequently takes multiple attempts (as many as 5), each attempt running for aroung 30 seconds...Terribly painful and an awful way to die.
We should at least be granting the prisoners some dignity in death if we were to do any such thing at all. An overdose of Morphine, for example. It is completely painless, and is guaranteed to work at a certain dose. The initial reaction is that the person ceases to care, followed immediately by a stage of euphoria, followed by a painless stopping of the heart. If you ever talk to someone that has actually had an OD on an opiate, they will tell you the same.
Frankly, however, killing someone for killing someone to show that killing someone is bad is just ludicrous and mean-spirited.

The only alternative to killing them is to keep them in prison forever, if there are enough murderers like in the states you would have alot of people in prison eventually. I agree with having the death penalty, they need to pick up the pace though.

Same as in any other country, the criminal gets out of jail and commits another crime.
