Because the Helmet was part of the military uniform and being out of uniform would have been a violation of dress codes and either way without obedience to the regulations no military can function. by showing their obedience they were exibiting the true principles of the Samurai ideal that they believed in.

I guess because of the same reason why other pilots wear one, to protect them against a bullet. Helmets probably never saved anyone in a plane crash.

Bit crap if they got shot through the face 10 minuets before and could have been saved if they had a helmet on.

heheh There are little radios in the helmets that allow them to talk to the other pilots. That's always been my theory anyway. They wouldnt want two pilots heading into the same exact same spot, cuz that would be useless. So they coordinate. *shrug*

They wear helmets because their communication set is in the helmet itself. Without it they would not be able to communicate with any other planes they are flying with.
