Jordan is a wonderful place. I have spent time in Amman and Irbid, mainly. I hope to return soon.
Jordanians are among the most educated people in the world, with high literacy and university attendance rates. The society is basically tribal - but don't let that worry you. Tribal implies kinship ties. Family is very important to Jordanian societies. Jordanian hospitality is also amazing.
The geography varies a great deal - from the lush green of the north (Jordan's "breadbasket") to the deserts in the south. The port town of Aqaba is really nice, if a bit touristy.
Petra is a spectacular archaeological site, but there are many others that are worth visiting. If you get a chance, swing down to the crusader castle at Kerak, or go north to Umm Qays. But don't miss Petra. (If you ever saw Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, you will recognize the scenery!)
Amman is one of the fastest growing cities in the Middle East; it changes dramatically each year, due to the high rate of development and influx of refugees (mainly Palestinian) and tourists (mainly from the Gulf States).
Glad to know you have come to enjoy such a wonderful country!

Yes I was there in nov 1995, saw Petra, Wadi Rum and Aquaba, and went back and stayed in a tent for two weeks in Wadi Rum in feb 1996. One of the most special experiences of my life to live in that beautiful special desert for two weeks. Me and my boy friend at the time (now my husband as a beduin woman in Petra predicted!) put up a two-man tent in a cave that we found in Wadi Rum and lived there. We took long walks every day exploring the desert. And at night the moon was so bright that we could play cards!
We also enjoyed Aquaba and stayed in Petra hotel - good clean rooms with TV, and ate fallafels for a quarter of a dinar. Smoked shisha pibes with apple tobacco.
I love Jordan, and would love to go back some day.
