When I connect wirelessly at home the connection isn't maintained for more than a few minutes, it used to work fine and I have another similar laptop that is able to maintain the connection so I don't think there is a problem with the network or router

Try setting the wireless mode to 801.11b only.
It might solve the problem if you have an Intel wireless card.
You might want to try and upgrade the wireless card's drivers too.

cswitch your router off and look for wireless networks on your laptop. You will probably find another wireless network in your area on your channel. Change your broadcast channel on your router to an empty one that is at least three channels separated from any other wireless network, e.g. if you find a network on channel 9, move yours to Channel 6, if you find a network on channel 6 move to 9 or 3 etc.
This was a problem where i lived until i moved my channels accordingly, now it works no problem.

hope this helps
