Vegetable Dyes are Organic Dyes made out of Flowers, Vegetables, Fruits, Seeds and so on.

It is done with the extract of the above. This was the mother of all dyeing methods. Where Indigo Dyeing were in use in India so many Centuries before. This is usually done is Wooden Drums but now modern dyeing process has also come-up.

These dyes are verymuch Eco-friendly and does not cause alergy, where as the Reactive / Pigment dyes might be alergic to some people.

Now there is good demand for vegatable dyes and te only disadvantage is the Consistancy in the shade of the finished Product ad secondly is costly comparing Non-organic dye stuff.

Moreover there are very few Processing facility for Vegetable Dyes, There is processing house in Pondichery (Auroville), India which is doing this and I am being told that consistancy is far better comparing any other places.

You can even try by yourselves on you white T-shirt, by twisting it and tying a know at some places. Dip it in a Drum which has diluted Turmeric liquid. Wash it many times after removing the Twist and Knot, Then take some Beet-root extract, dilute it in to a drum, once again twist the T-shirts with different fold, dip it, remove the knot and Twist, wash it Seperately many time so that the un-fixed dyes goes away. Dry it, you have any excellent Organic dyed Tie & Dye T-shirt.

This is almost a lost art. When I was younger it was a used alot. I found a site for you that should be most helpful. In choosing your dyes and where it comes from. As well on how its done. But one word of caution , Ware Gloves it does stain and as dont use your washer when dying things. To dye also we used a wooden spoon which help out greatly . Metal spoons seem to not let the dye take hold for some reason. It is fun and if your creative and artistic you will love the results you get from your efforts.

Vegetable dyes are made out of the leaves. To the best of my knowledge this is peculiar to Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
In A.P. they make "kalankari" prints using vegetable dyes. These dyes are eco-friendly. In Sanganer (Rajasthan) vegetable dyes are used for tie & dye prints.

Different leaves have different hues inherent in them. You take one leaf of Brinjal and mix it with three leaves of Neem. Crush them thoroughly and add a little lime (chuna) to this liquid and you will find a new colour. There are formulas to bring out different colours which I have forgotten. You can try one more experiment. Mix turmeric (haldi) power with water and add lime (chuna) and you will find the colour changing to red.
