A monitor generally describes the screen that you're looking at now! (if you're reading this on a computer!) :o)
You can get CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) Monitors - They are the big old style ones that take up a lot of room on a desk. Generally though an expensive CRT monitor produces the best picture...
You can also get LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) Monitors - They are the "flat" slimline ones that you see poping up everywhere now...
You can also get TFT (Thin Film Transistor) Monitors - Basically the same as an LCD monitor but uses a slightly different technology to produce the picture...
You can also use a Television as a "monitor"
You can also get Plasma monitors - (it's the same technology as a Plasma TV)
That's basically the different types... but you can also get sub categories of these such as progectors and things like that... (In fact a projector is simple a very small version of an LCD monitor but it uses light and lenses to allow the picture to be increased in size to cover a wall!
The advantages of a CRT monitor are that they last a long time, they produce by far the best picture, and are much more responsive... they are also cheaper - although now some low end LCD models are getting cheaper!
The disadvantages are that they are bulky, they get hot (so if you have a room of them then the room will get VERY hot - this happenes alot in school computer rooms or large open plan offices etc), they also use a lot more elecricity.
Advantages of LCD/TFT - Slim/space saving, Use much less power, dont suffer from the "flicker" that you can get on a CRT (therefore easier on the eyes if useing for a long time)
Disadvantages - The colour can sometimes look a bit washed out (especially on cheap models), Sometimes you can get "ghosting" which means that the screen isn't refreshing quickly enough (it will creat shadows on the screen that last a split second but can get annoying when playing games or watching dvds)
However if you spend anything over £150 - £200 on an LCD/TFT monitor then all these problems don't exist! - I have a Samsung SyncMaster 940BF - It's totally awesome and I would NEVER go back to CRT... (and Im a graphic artist!)

* proctor: someone who supervises (an examination)
* admonisher: someone who gives a warning so that a mistake can be avoided
* an ironclad vessel built by Federal forces to do battle with the Merrimac
* electronic equipment that is used to check the quality or content of electronic transmissions

USS Monitor became the prototype of a form of ship built by several navies for coastal defence in the 1860s and 1870s and known as a monitor. It was a low-freeboard, mastless steam-powered vessel with one or two rotating armoured turrets. The low freeboard meant that these ships were unsuitable for ocean-going duties, but had the advantage that there was less area to cover with armour and the sea washing over the deck in heavy weather would keep the vessel stable.
# The Monitor was a character created by George Perez for DC Comics's Crisis on Infinite Earths maxi-series.
# A monitor is an approach to synchronizing two or more computer tasks that use a shared resource, usually a hardware device or a set of variables.
# Work has been done, monitoring program is required.
# a device similar to a television screen that receives video signals from the computer and displays the information for the user.
# To conduct a planned sequence of observations or measurements to assess whether a CCP is under control and to produce an accurate record for future use in verification.
# A peripheral device with a screen for the visual display of information.
# An application that receives RTCP packets sent by participants in an RTP session, in particular the reception reports, and estimates the current quality of service for distribution monitoring, fault diagnosis and long-term statistics. The monitor function is likely to be built into the application(s) participating in the session, but may also be a separate application that does not otherwise participate and does not send or receive the RTP data packets. These are called third party monitors.
# A screen which allows the user to watch and interact with the computer. A monitor is different from a television because it does not have a tuner for pulling in TV signals, is of a much higher resolution than TVs are.
# The most commonly used output device for displaying text and graphics on a computer.
# Measurement of air pollution is referred to as monitoring. EPA, state, and local agencies measure the types and amounts of pollutants in community air. The 1990 Clean Air Act requires states to monitor community air in polluted areas to determine if the areas are being cleaned up according to schedules set by law.

One monitor was in school who helped keep the kids in order. Another monitor was a kind of lizard and last of all there was a naval ship with one or two really heavy guns that could sail close inshore to bombard the enemy. A verb. Sorry, I am sure there are many more but that's all I can remember at the moment

a monitor is a viewing unit for a computer. you can get standard/flat panel and lcd monitors etc. lcd and flat panel are the modern trend, flat panel one's are very thin and can be large or smaill, lcd one's have crystal clear visibility. standard monitor's are very and not very many people buy them, unless they are looking for a base unit. the advantages/disadvantages, if you buy a lcd or flat panel monitor, you get quality for life and crystal clear graphical display. modern monitors can be pricey, so you need to know what you're looking for.

a monitor does not have the function to pick up signals such as tv as it is not equip with a reciever. It gets its picture from being plugged into something eg computer.
