Self is a single unique point-of-view. It tends to be partly defined by the personal ego boundary of the individual. Western culture tends to confuse ego defined self as Self.
It (the ego self) also seems to be in a constant state of flux (change) due to influences of memories, current sensory perception, thoughts and feelings. The true Self is not so effected.
The surface self seems to change more rapidly than the deep inner self. It may be possible that there is a part of self that is so deep as to be practically unchangeable without catastrophic events. Below (or primary to being) is the Self.
Christian, Jewish and Muslim mystics and Zen Masters claim that the very core of every human is a spark of the Divine which might be hidden, but is not changeable.
The human mind tends to develop only as a layer that it makes an objective point of view possible. Upon "turning off the mind" one becomes aware of the invariance of the Universe and of Self.

I define self as a temporary conglomerate which is dependent on all the variables to which humans are prone to experience. People often say they experience life changing events, and that means that their self awareness changed as well. But daily events change our attitude and motivation, which are two characteristics of self.
People have a comfort zone within themselves which they see as their 'self.' People are more or less resistant to change depending on many variables. The power of mind is another characteristic of self, but it is modified by things such as nutrition or alcohol. We are all familiar with the persons who becomes sleepy or violent when they drink. It is as if they were a different person. The internal self which is controlling them has been changed by externals.
We are familiar with people who fall in love. It is as if they are a different person at times. The internal self that is controlling them has been changed by internals.
;-D does the soul change, or just sit back and whisper in our ear?

Self does not change. Self is the Supreme, of which you me are a part. It is inside us as well as outside us. It is homogeneous, ominpotent, omnipresent, present everywhere.
One needs to put in constant efforts to realise the Self and reach a state of bliss. Once you have realised the self, then there is no difference between you and everything else.
All forms of seperation disaapear including identities, religion, caste, race etc.

yes but its subtle to others ... you have more ego when younger (to make sure you survive) and later it should develop more into being part of the collective (maturity) don't be surprised when u have 2 different states of being or consciousness
