If it's fairly substantial, check in your local paper or yellow pages for tree services, you need someone to grind the stump out with a special machine called, believe it or not, a stump grinder. If it's fairly small, say only a few inches across, you might hack it out with a strong spade and a pickaxe. The alternative is to cut it off at ground level with a chainsaw (whatever you do, don't cut roots with a chainsaw), so it's not in the way, treat it with stump killer (such as SBK), and wait for nature to take its course, which could take a number of years.

If the tree is already cut down drill a number of holes into the top of the stump 4ins deep and about half an inch in diameter then get some tree stump killer and put in the holes. But keep the stump coverd then keep topping it up. Other wise get a firm in who have got stump grinder they will do it but it will be costly.

Dig deep around the base, chopping at the exposed roots, then hook up a tow chain to a vehicle with some muscle ( something probably more than 4 cylinders - like a quarter or half ton truck) and step on the gas. If this stump is near a structure, be sure to pull very slowly and have a second person to tell you if you need to stop and do some more digging and root chopping.

Depending on the size of the stump, it is best to cut it off as close to the ground as possible. when this is done, score the stump in a criss cross action, witha chainsaw then poor kerosene into the grooves. This will kill the stump and roots in due course.

Cut it close to the ground and drill holes in it and place dirt on it. It will take about six months but will finally rot. I did this about every two weeks or more if I felt like it. It worked. If you don't want to wait that long then the other suggestions will work.

I had two giant conifers professionally removed. The stump was left and when I asked what would happen to them, the answer was it would just rot with time!
