Washes fine, and sometimes spins, but not always. Only turns slowly on occasions, leaving clothes wet, spins up to full speed other times. It's not overloaded, as tried with half loads etc. Any clues?

I cleared the filter out when it first started happening (nothing much in there) and that did not cure the problem. Motor seems fine for the whole of the wash cycle, so don't think that it is that. Could be the drive belt that's slipping when the motor tries to get up to 1200 RPM.

The timer clicks round and the motor is running when it should be spinning. It sometimes gets up to a slow spin, other times it doesn't move and other times it spins properly.

Model is an Ariston AWD1200.

Washing Machine Only Spins Sometimes

It wont start to spin untill it's emptied properly, so could be the pump/filter or water level sensor which is holding the spin off intermittently. Could be a dozen other things as well, needs ckhecked out properly. Whenit should be spinning, what happens? does it just come to a halt, or can you hear a motor running or timer clicking? What is the make and model, why does hardly anybody put that in their question??

I had this once and discovered that the filter needed cleaning. Check if you've got a filter at the front (mine is near the bottom of the machine). I twisted it out and cleaned the gunk that inevitably collects in it (as it's a filter geddit!). Then the machine spun happily and I didn't have to call out an engineer. Obviously if this doesn't work then you may have to get someone in to fix it, but it's worth a try. Good luck!

I had this problem. eventually it won't spin at all, as I found when I opened the door and flooded the kitchen.
It was a problem with the motor. I got a local bloke in to repair it - it cost about £16 for the new motor, plus labour.

Could be the belt, which turns the drum. If its a couple of yrs old, the belt becomes loose and isn't as elasticated therefore it doesn't turn the drum when it should. Quite cheap to replace and can be done by someone who knows a bit about wash machines.

the filter could be blocked, but going by what you are describing the belt could be worn or even worse the motor may be on the way out.
For the belt it will be around 10 quid.
For the new motor - new washing machine -

You mentioned 'sometimes'. Read the manual again. It could be the 'settings'. The one I own - I have a choice of selecting or ignoring the spin during the wash cycle.

I had this problem 2 years ago, my dad replaced the motor coils with fresh ones and it worked fine since.

try cleaning out the filter located most times on the front of the machine if it gets full of muck from repeated use it can stop the machine from spinning properly
