Both! At the moment I have lecky blanket on low, hot water bottle, one very warm dog and probably the cat join the party soon - lucky I recently upgraded from a single bed to a queen size! I also have a duck down duvet and a feather bed topper which is a pad of feathers about 2 inches thick that sits on top of the mattress - best invention ever - it cost about a $150 dollars (New Zealand), keeps you cosy and is like sleeping on a cloud!

I had an electric blanket disaster once ... It went bang in the middle of the night! Also a hot water bottle disaster ... It spilled water in my bed so after that ... Neither! My dog (See pic) Sleeps on my bed and he's the best source of heat you could hope for! It's like cuddling up to a gigantic,warm teddy bear. I'd recommend it to anyone!

'The best thing I have used is...I get a man's tube sock, you know the long ones..
I fill it with rice.. put it in the microwave for two and a half minutes.
In the winter time I have several..everyone wants one..
Oh! I forgot to mention, leave enough room in the sock to tie a knot in the top.
This gives off a steam heat..If you keep it under the covers it will stay hot most of the night.
If you make a little tent by your feet with the covers you can feel the steam heat.
It will be very hot so be careful. What is great about you can have as many as you want.
I get my rice at Sam's Club, I get a huge bag at little cost..
When the sock gets soiled just pour rice into a clean sock.

Electric blanket is best with a water bottle you have to keep changing the water all the time to keep it warm.

another way is to have your heater (if you have one) facing towards the bottom of your bed.
