I'm a teacher trying to be a permanently ex-teacher. Yes corporal punishment has a place but not the English cane, that is nasty. I suggest the Scottish strap (AKA belt, tause, Lochgelly) as it spreads the force over a wider area and stings but doesn't damage. Interesting that none of the answers yet talk of 'beating' children, it'll come I suppose.
Something is certainly needed as some kids are very wise to the fact that nothing really can be done to them leaving teachers to p**s into the wind when it comes to applying discipline.
As far is as capitol punishment is concerned, to send any child to the US government would be a terrible thing; possibly worse than capital punshment.

I think it's a totally good idea. i mean, there are two kind of teachers: the soft and the severe, the soft you love and don't repsect, the severe you respect and onyl sometimes love. honestly, i've seen so many good teachers, soft teachers, who loved the students, and had to have the students spit all over her, i was disgusted. and the teachers are just so powerless it's sad! the only ones who get respect are those you know you'll pay if you cross. corporal punsihment should DEFINITELY be brought bakc to schools up to colleges, though not as strict as before. but the humiliation is good: a teenager guy won't call his teacher a **** twice if the firts time he gets his behidn bared and whipped. i know this sounds funny, but it's quite reasonable and makes total sense. i'm pro-punishment in shcools, all the way. even though i'm 15 and sormtiems can't RESIST making cheek. just a bit. :D

Yes ,i think so ,the older generation who were brought up with it are a pretty decent bunch and it doesnt seem to have done them any harm,in fact quite the reverse. I was punished at home and at school and do not resent it to this day. The do-gooders who say it breeds violence dont know what they are talking about,we didnt hang around in gangs smashing up everything that came in our path and intimidating people.Bullies were sorted out straight away and not just by teachers but by the parents as well when they got home. I never heard of a teacher being murdered or beaten up like you do now.
In a recent survey it was revealed that 78% of boys carry a knife around now.
Having said all that ,i dont think it should be left solely to the teachers to teach discipline and respect !

As a pupil, I actually think it would be a good idea to reinforce capitol punishment of some sort. I find it extremely annoying that when I, and the majority of my peers, try really hard to be successful and then some idiot won't stop talking or being a general pest. It is unfair that we should suffer at their expense.
Truthfully, I would only use it on those who just don't know when enough is enough.

I think corporal punishment in the classroom is a good thing, as long as it is measured. The risk is that you get a teacher releasing their sadistic streak on some poor unsuspecting child.

I am not a teacher but I am a strong supporter of it. When I was at school we feared the cane. I never got it as I had been taught good manners by my parents. These days, it seems that pupils can attack teachers and behave exactly as they wish yet teachers can do nothing. I think we need to bring it back.

Used to be a teacher, still in education.
Corporal punsihment is moot. It is neither more or less effective than other types of punishment. Keeping kids on task and effective classroom management do more for behavior than punishment.

No, I work as a teaching assistant in a school with a lot of social, behavioural problems. We use the language of choice it is really effective even with difficult children.
If you teach children that violence is the answer then that is all they will know and use. We need to show children strategies on how to deal with each other and learn to cope with the word no.

I think it's a very good idea!!
If you hang a naughty child in front of it's peers, it would be a much better deterrent than, for instance, sending it home for a week of leisure time!!!
And I think I gained a great deal from being soundly spanked across my naked buttocks and thighs, in front of the whole class, by a teacher who was clearly not enjoying it and only doing it for my own good!!

No I am not a teacher, but I am not a parent. When I was a child, teachers were allowed to paddle students, and we had a fractions of the disciplinary problems that you hear about these days.
