At the time of the Atlantic slave trade, it was a standard, casual English term for black people. The word later became associated with an overt contempt, a racist assumption of inherent black inferiority, making it extremely pejorative.

Well, way back in the 1950s in the USA when the division between blacks and whites was at its greatest. *** ger was used as a derogatory term.

By the way, the people below me who say "ni gger" is a Latin/Spanish word is completely wrong, "*****" is the Spanish word for "black".

I am guessing because of the countries of Niger and Nigeria, or the Niger river. The names, given to an uneducated person (as many slave trade sailors and workers were), on a map could be mispronounced, and a person who comes from that area, considered that name. Also the word ni*ger is slang for an ignorant person, not sure exactly what language that comes from, possibly old english or Dutch.

There are books that tell you the origin of all words. I forget what they are called, but you might just want to ask that question in words and word play. Not this exact question, but what the name of the book is where you look it up or you may just want to look it up in one of the on-line dictionaries and see what it says. Do not ever use wikpedia because it is not a reliable source. It can be changed at any time by anyone even you or I. We could just pase any bogus info into it.

I do not like any word that insults anyone.
