I have the free versions of all these programs. Is that sufficient protection for the average home computer?

More than enough, I recommend Kaspersky Internet Security

ZoneAlarm- pretty great, the best ever
Avast - Pretty good
About Spyware terminator, i don't know. I suggest u running Spybot and AdAware, as they are really better and more popular. Anyway more than 1 antispyware program is always better. I have ZoneAlarm, AVG, Spybot, AdAware, Yahoo antispy( with yahoo toolbar on Mozilla Firefox) and Norton Antispy( With yahoo toolbar on Internet explorer) 2gether. Mozilla Firefox is a safer browser, since most viruses are targeting activex, and firefox doesn't use activex. Another reason for me for recommending Spybot is that it automatically immunises Internet Explorer to block bad pages and bad cookies. Get Spybot from http://www.safer-networking.org

Again 2 ensure safety u can install McAfee Site Advisor in your browser ( http://www.siteadvisor.com )

About having 2 antivirus programs, pls ensure that both donot conflict. Never run McAfee antivirus with Norton antiirus. Avast with AVG can be safe coz both are owned by the same company. Still 2 antiviruses can make ur pc slow. Yes online scans like housecall can help as an alternative.

A hardware firewall ( router ) is always many times safer than a software one. Installing a router with ZOneAlarm will be perfect combination against hackers.

That should be more than sufficient coverage. Another anti virus a lot of people like is AVG. They do have a free version at their site, to which I believe is www.avg.com. I would reccomend having a second antivirus program, as that would give you added security. I suggest this due to the fact that I am a computer technician and know that not 1 antivirus program catch all..... but 2 I've seen to be sufficient.

Boy, it's like you're planing for the end of your system. You should better know what you're combining so as not to blow-up your system. For a safe and fast navigation, just use Zone alarm, and NOD32 antivirus system it will do everything you need. The rest are bull ****. The give you a free version and tells you it does wonders, but beware! Just download NOD£" and NOD FIX, you're done. I am telling you from experience because I use a home computer and nearly got damaged by those things. Just do as I told you, you,ll have safe and fast navigation, depending on your internet connection. I use 56k moden, but it's unbeleivably fast because I use a good RAM releaser and speed boast programs. Goodluck.

It is more than adequate protection just watch out for conflicts arising from using any of these programmes together.
Be careful particularly of the scan results of your antispyware - if you are unsure always quarantine first, delete later.Spyware Terminator provides resident protection so it may prevent certain actions which are legitimate. Although you can add more antispyware (dont use more than one resident protection feature) don't be tempted to add any further antivirus products.

This is fine. One is anti-virus, one if a firewall, and one is a malware finder. These programs don't interfere with each other as others said. I wouldn't suggest running two anti-virus programs. If you are unsure Avast is catching something use an online scanner like housecall. Having two anti-virus programs uses a lot of resources and often use the same .dll and system files. They will kill each other eventually.

Instead of all these three softwares, I suggest you to install panda antivirus that have all these three features. It does slow you booting speed but after the computer fully boot the system became protected and efficient.

On a home computer, I think that would be enough to take care of your PC. I just think that you need a Firewall. That would be better if you always update your antivirus.

spyware terminator comes with clam anti virus anyway and i use avast which i rate very well and zone alarm is one of the top firewalls, you don't need another anti virus prog on ya pc cos it will clash with avast and create problems.
