I truly feel that I have an addictive personality. It's either drugs (previously) or constant smoking, or over-eating. It seems as though if I stop one, I have to replace it with another. Is this simply human nature? Is the definition of addictive personality trivial? I wonder.

You ARE me! I have an addictive personality! I get addicted to EVERYTHING! When I quit smoking I took up running and became addicted to that! When I tried to quit drinking I became addicted to (cough syrup) if you can believe that! In college I was addicted to sex. You name it, I'm addicted to it! Or was or will be! It IS a personality disorder! I see a therapist these days and have been diagnosed as bi-polar. I could go on and on, but I bet you already know all of the problems that go with this! I have empathy for you. Wish I had the answer you need! But I don't ! All I can say is YOU ARE RIGHT! You're not crazy!

I am not sure exactly how common the problem is, but some of us are programmed to need patterns. Whatever we do, we do the same way most of the time. I buy the same few foods, do the same schedule (even when it's not necessary) of getting up early, etc. Such people are very vulnerable to addiction, because we know the same thing will make us feel good that did the last time.

Problem is, it doesn't work. That chocolate fudge brownie may have made you feel good when you were empty, but now it's gonna make you feel like you're stuffed too tight, and may even cause you to run awkwardly toward the bathroom. And drugs give a smaller and smaller kick each time, and start having the nasty effects overwhelm the good ones.

I have had plenty of addictions in my day, although there are a few I managed to avoid. Why develop an addiction when you know you're going to have to go cold turkey to break it? I've already eaten my last piece of chocolate. I figure I had my lifetime's share by the time I was 40. Probably two or three other people's lifetime share, too . . .

And I know it is not everyone, because My Steve did not do that, and many people I know are not like that. They don't even get addicted to coffee!!! Amazing, aren't they?

This has always interested me because I am the same. It's kind of a hedonist thing- always wanting pleasure. And also its a kind of want to constantly get mashed(pissed/stoned/pilled up etc) maybe because normal life can be boring. To be honest if I was in the most beautiful place in the world(white sandy beaches/palm trees/waterfalls) and I hada supply of alcohol and drugs, I'd probably still want to indulge, or would I? I'm not sure...Maybe some humans just think too much and aren't satisfied and need something extra. I know I do. Not to say I don't appreciate life though, I do....

I am like that over chocolate. I feel that if someone is addictive, it is to fill a void in their life. If you are not pleased with yourself, you just say, oh, to heck with it, and go on and give yourself what makes you happy. It is only a band aid though, because it does not cure the addiction. I think, like eating and smoking, you have to go cold turkey. Get something else to replace it not so addictive, something you like but not that you would go overboard with, and just keep on doing it, something that you kind of like but not as much. You won't be over-eating maybe that particular thing, or doing that one thing that might be damaging your health.

I know how you feel. For me the best way to deal with it is trying to be moderate in everything (so you don't don't cause too much damage to yourself...). Works pretty well for now.
I often wonder about addictions myself, I honestly don't know anybody who is not addicted to something - physically, mentally or emotionally...

Somewhere along the line, you have confused a very condescending nature actually masking an overwhelming sense of self-entitlement.

A 15 lb smoked turkey breast, and a 12 piece KFC in one sitting is nothing trivial.

Don't wonder, it's the truth

You and billions of others honey!! Very few people out there that don't overindulge in something. You quit drugs on your own?? If so, you are stronger than you give yourself credit for. Keep working on yourself!! We all have to do this!!
