I would refuse to choose by choosing I am giving control to the intruders... By refusing to choose I am in control...
An intruder in the situation you have described is looking for power by forcing a choice if I refuse to choose they have no power and the "game" is no longe exciting for them... Thus it will end... Where as if I play along and choose I have fed thier power need and reinforced thier view of themselves as powerful... The "game" would continue...
The rules of the "game" were not to my liking so I changed them giving myself and my family a much greater chance of winning as we would no longer be playing by thier rules but by mine and when I make the rules I will always win....
