when i handled family law issues in my first firm we used a computer program called the disso-master (no joke). It asks for number of minor of children, wages, rent for each party, and other expenses and it spits out a recommended number. All judges will refer to these numbers as this program is the accepted standard in determining child support. (There is a competing formula program but they use the same algorithm and produce similar is not identical final numbers) However the judge has discretion as to whether he will reduce or increase the number depending on the circumstances. Sometimes the amount of child support exceeded the wages of the spouse who owed support and usually the judge reduced the amount in the his decision.

Because everyone who did family law in our firm just plugged these numbers into the program we never took the time to figure out the formulas.
