this is what i think.........i think as far as being the best driver, yes he is one of the best well rounded drivers in nascar.i dont think that he will surpass richard petty for all time wins,i dont think that he will win 7 titles.but u also have to look at the times now.they have changed so much.the rules i dont think will allow anyone to ever beat petty for wins or championships.one thing is for sure though,he can drive a car as well as anybody that drives now or has driven in the past.

By the numbers and stats, No.
Jeff is only 2 wins away from beating Dale E. in career wins, But Dale and Richard each have 7 cup championships. Jeff only has 4.
With the new point (chase) system and the high level of competition from so many other teams, I just don't see Gordon winning 3 or 4 more cups.He may even win one or 2 more, but not 3 or 4. No way.No one driver will win 4 of the next ten championships.
I also very much doubt Jeff Gordon will race for ten more years.

THE BEST? STATISTICALLY FRED LORENZEN WON THE HIGHEST PERCENT OF THE RACES HE ENTERED. HE DROVE THE NUMBER 28 LAFAYETTE FORD IN THE 60'S. HE ONLY ENTERED THE BIG MONEY RACES AND WON ALOT OF THEM. WAS AMONG THE BIGGEST MONEY WINNERS EACH YEAR WHILE ONLY RUNNING A LIMITED SCHEDULE. HE RETIRED EARLY TO BECOME AN ANNOUNCER FOR TV. PROBABLY RICHARD PETTY WILL ALWAYS BE KNOWN AS THE BEST DRIVER EVER. HE HAS THE BABE RUTH MYSTIQUE AND IS STILL TODAY A FAN FAVORITE.

Yes he will. He may already be. You have to look at the level of competition now- there is so much more parity then there was in the years of Petty. Gordon is already the most talented active driver, with Tony Stewart a close second. This is not just personal opinion. This is also the opinion of most professionals. I know, so many people hate him, but he really is a great driver, but most won't admit it because of personal dislike.

I don't believe that he will surpass Richard Petty and drivers such as Dale Sr. I do believe that Jeff Gordon is by far the greatest driver from his era.
