I have noticed this with people in the banking and investing proffessions mostly. You could be talking about something totally off topic and they start talking about interest rates or something. You feel like telling them to shut up. What do you think might be their problem?

Yeah, I'm sure it's their problem. Unless your doing something really cool like saving humanity or are an artist with interesting work why would I be interested in hearing your boring crap unless I'm doing the same thing as you?

Yes i was one of them ... A registered nurse and when talking to friends, even outside the work place ... We'd start to talk about things and others and would automatically switch back to work! It made it difficult for our husbands/partners as they felt cut off. Yet of all Blah! We didn't mean to do it, 9 times out of 10 we didn't even realise we were doing it. You ask what might be the problem? I guess certain professions take so much out of you, so much out of your life in general, from extra duties to stress, worries about a particular patient, knowing a certain treatment would be so beneficial to someone but unavailable for financial reasons etc ... You just find it impossible to swicth off long term.
I only bank now and not that often reason why i don't talk shop all the time and find that, when talking to my friends working full time... They still do it. It's not meant to be rude for others, simply a thing you can't switch on and off as you would like to.

Well, maybe they think you are interested. If you have said you would like to buy a house some day, then most people would like to know about interest rates. I think to dominate the conversation with that is rude. You can change the subject you know. I know of someone that never comes up for air, and I just hate to talk to that person, so you just have to try to avoid thekm and say, I would love to talk, but I am late for an appointment. You control if you want to be trapped or not. The first time, maybe you cannot control it, but from then on, you know better. Good luck.

Yeah I have a buddy who think's he's God's gift to Amgen (a pharmaceutical/research company based in biology and chemistry). He's a lowly intern. They practically take people off the streets to do their menial labor. But it's like ALL he talks about. He even had the nerve to insult my job indirectly, yet blatantly nonetheless.

it is not only with banking and investing pros, it is true with every self centred obnoxious brute. people should start listening first than start talking offbeat.
