Till economic reforms started creating wealth in society, India had no choice but to tow the line of one of the super powers. Now India is an economic power house. each country in the world would want to have good relations with India. Pakistani software companies would be told in more than 50 countries that until tehy improve relations with India, no business would be possible. In reality India did not have to be a chamcha of any country right from 1947. But our leaders did not see the point and played second fiddle to USSR. BJP changed that. Now on it is going to be different. each country including USA and Russia would be on India's side. But that does nto mean that India has become a super power. Indians would have to work very hard for 50 years for that. USA took 150 years from 1774 to 1925 to become a super power. India can do that in a third of that. But with too many Laloos and jokers around, it would be a huge task.

Right now it would probably be United States. Many firms in United states demand for Indian workers because they have extensive IT know how and are relatively cheaper to hire. IT companies like microsoft also have factories R&D facilities in India. Many American telecommunications companies set up call-centres in India. However Russia and India do not yet have any significant economic ties. Thus it would be the United states from an economic perspective.

Actually, the old Soviet Union used to give India a lot of military aid and let their Navy ships dock in India. This was because at one time, the Peoples Republic of China was a threat to them, and the PRC was a serious threat to the security of India. Also, there was a time that Pakistan was getting most of their military aid from PRC. The United States has always given agricultural and economic aid, when India needed it. They preferred the aid from the USA, because there were not as many strings attached as the aid from the Soviet Union. There are not very many people immigrating from India to Russia. Most want to immigrate to the USA. Figure it out your self.

Close relationship is a relative term. It may be explained on the basis of our past experiences. Considering our relations with both U.S. and Russia, I feel presently they seems to be balanced, This should be maintained, since these countries influence the world affairs.
