hi...i'm an artist and i think that this is a very good question...yes, it is very true that imagination is more important in producing art pieces...people go ooh and ah over paintings that look so similar to a photo or something real which i do not understand...where's the value of art there? instead of buying a painting like that for thousands or even millions, they can just have the photo enlarged and hanged in their house....whereas, imaginative is a very beautiful state...you can't achieve it anywhere but frm your mind.. it is not copying or reproducing...but instead, its frm u...and you would be amazed to see how highly imaginative some artists can be...they are amazingly creative....
however, your point that every artist should be imaginative would not be accepted by many? the reason? because different artists have different taste, styles and thinking....so, its up to them how they would wanna produce a piece...
hope this answers your question...you can contact me if you want to know more about other stuffs on art...

well its true that they make things look real too..some artists paint out what is inside...like the reality of there hearts!
and some paint the outside..this world, the nature..or anything
there is imagination involved in the former and reality in the latter
like dreams..some things are imaginary..yet associated with reality...
in other words..there exists a thin line between imagination and reality
so there can be no answer to its importance

You made me think of David with this one. When he was First Painter for Napoleon, he did a very realistic painting of the coronation. The great thing about the painting is that he made the emperor look fit and tall. He even brought his mother there through the canvass, though she wasn't able to attend the event in actuality. He was one of the great super realists, but wasn't devoid of imagination - he oozed it.
You're right that not being able to work outside of what's "real" is limiting (cameras can do that), but it's the ability to creatively portray reality that makes a great artist (humble opinion).

Everyone likes a unique drawing.
If ppl just copy what other ppl draw then ppl will be bored.
It is better to express ur feelings thru ur imagination then to just paint a drawing that will bore ppl.
People will judge by the creativity and uniqueness. They don't want to see a picture of trees that are exactly the same. They want u to express ur individuality in ur paintings.

100% for me is to be creative in my art.
There is a large group of artist who are called: 'Super-realists' and their work looks like photographs. Mostly they do this to showcase their work to the advertising industry, so it is more of a Graphic Art for me.
The whole point of art is to challenge our creativity and imagination.

Artists create from their feelings and what they see. Imagination is used in both - just differently. Why judge which is used? Instead - judge content, balance, contrast, and anything else that constitutes excellence. Enjoy whichever you find turns YOU on... the artists only creates that what he/she must.
