Every few months I get this intense back pain. It starts out feeling like heartburn, but then feels like my spine is exploding or being crushed.
what could be happening?

Hi,
You could be suffering from poor digestion. The more common symptoms for poor digestion are bloating, constipation and gas but there are many other symptoms to consider. Abdominal cramping, chronic fatigue, premature aging, joint and muscle pain, arthritis, and nausea are just a few of the other symptoms that can be caused by poor digestion. I make this suggestion on the basis that you mention it starts out feeling like heartburn which of course is closely linked to poor digestion. Do you eat a lot of processed foods? Processed foods are a major contributor to poor digestion. Anyway, something to consider before you see the doctor :)

Sounds like a muscle spasm or maybe a nerve that has been damaged. You can not get a proper diagnosis on-line. You need to see your doctor and have it checked out. It could be some thing simple, but only a doctor can tell you for sure. Make an appointment ASAP.

Sounds like maybe you have some sort of problem with the gall bladder, either it may be inflamed or you may have a couple of stones. Obviously, this is just my humble opinion but whatever, I really think you should go see your GP. I have gall stones at the moment and when I have an attack, the pain is unbelievablely intense agony :(
