Why is the thermostat turned down so low in Starbucks stores? During this past summer, it was pleasant to get out of the heat. But now that the weather is getting cooler in most places around the United States, what's the idea of keeping the thermostat at the same setting inside their locations?

Keeps the loiterers down to a minimum (just long enough to cool their coffee to a drinkable temperature) and keeps the employees from burning up over the espresso makers.
If you're going to hang out at Starbucks', wear a politically correct fleece pullover! (Even better, one with an NPR logo on it!)

Hey Bird,
While I would like to think that the theory is about loiterers or getting your coffee to cool off and then get you to leave - it's not that scientific.
Most chains have a recommended temperature for their dining room. It's typically 72-76 (f). So when they open, the thermostat is either set or the cooling is just turned on (Temp set long ago). To keep us from adjusting the temperature, the thermostat is kept either near the cashier/coffee station or is trapped under a locked plastic cover somewhere higher up in the dining room.
If the Thermostat is near the Coffee Station/Cashier, that is normally the warmest part of the room.
If the Thermostat is under that locked plastic cover, the cover doesn't get the "Wind Chill" that we get - So it is "Artificially" high.
If we complain to the staff (At any food place, not just Starbucks) they are the ones running around and they look at us the same way that a pet looks at us when we speak to it... Nothings wrong with the temperature.... Now give me some money tips!

I haven't noticed that before. I would think that the thermostat setting would depend on what part of the US you visit a Starbucks in. You might want to ask the manager this question.

Most places don't turn the heat on till October 15.

to get from a cooling mode to heating mode is not congruent with the outside temperature, and may need mechanical configuration to achieve heating mode. they may have not done that yet.

in europe either temperarue in starbucks was too low and i haven't any idea about this
