I'm not atheist. However, it seems to me that if a God or higher power didn't exist, man would create one anyway in his mind for the comfort of it. Psychologically, it is much, much, much more comforting to believe in someone up there that looks over us, or that when someone we love dies that they go to a better place. To believe otherwise can be bleak. So man would invent a God either way.

Why do people think there is only one way to do life? Whether it comes to religion, politics, or any idea and concept, people want it to be one way and one way only. Obviously each person must "do" life on their terms. People come to atheism because they've been through religion before and have found that faith doesn't work, or they never believed in the first place. What's wrong with that?
Maybe its weird that you would believe in an imaginary being that helps you througout life instead of realising that we are left to ourselves. Kids think like children will think, they are naturally self-centered, more than most, if you study developmental psychology then you will learn that. They (kids) think the world revolves around them but it doesn't. Then they become adults and grow up.
What makes you think religion is natural? What? As far as I know religion has caused most conflicts throughout history, people want to be martyrs, they want to convert others and they push their religion upon others. There is nothing innocent about religion, people regard it as truth but in reality its just a way for people to be brainwashed and controlled.
As for me, I like to question, I like to think, and to know. I don't want to be brainwashed and to believe in something without questioning. That would be just stupid, because you could then fall for any scam that comes your way. People can believe what they want, as long as they leave me alone and don't try to live my life for me. Sometimes that's what it seems like, people want to live my life for me, and well they can't. I have my own life, my own brain and I want to be my own person and not a personal puppet or pawn for others to control.

Yes, I'll go with that..religion is the mental disorder, and causes all the problems. Aetheists are people who aren't scared to admit that there is no higher power except nature.

No, it is not a disease. Every person has his/her own belief, not believing in any higher power does not matter if at heart you are a good person, not hurting anyone and doing your own work

I think believing in something that cannot be seen. felt, smelled, etc is the disease.
God was created to make people feel that it wasn't their fault...to give them a reward for living through hard times...something to believe in when all other hope was gone...
If God was real, and as described, do you think he would allow everything that is going on to happen?
I don't, so he must be imaginary.

Well let's think about it:
Atheists accept the world as it really is.
Theists see a fantasy world that isn't there.
Now, who is more likely to have the mental disorder? It really has to be theists, doesn't it?

To believe in God is a choice. Atheists don't believe, because they chose to believe in themselves, Not because they've a mental disorder.

Religious fanaticism is a mental illness in my book.
Religion is not "natural" and Small kids are not born knowing about religion; it is something that they "learn" to believe in.

absolutely! Just like most addictions are caused by depressed people trying to self-medicate, (who don't even realize that they are depressed). Most atheists are extremely discontented people. There is a God-size whole in all of us, and only the real thing will fill it up.
