If you are asking for USTA amateur tournaments....there used to be a guide to help score your level that would be certified for "Levels Tournament".....this way you would be playing people of equal level.....a beginner is around the 2.0 to 2.5.....3.5 to 4.0 was when it started getting serious.....4.5 and above became really serious players....check with a local pro and he will rate your game.....if you dominate to many tournaments at that level you will quickly be moved up.........professional is I believe on points and number of tournaments.......I think that although you were much better then I ....I might still out rank you due to the volume of tournaments that I might have played...who you beat also factors in.......GOOD LUCK ON THE TOUR!!

The ATP (men's) and WTA (women's) decide on the points given to each player after he/she has played in the tournament. grand slam champions will get the most points. Tour tounament champions will get some points as well. then every player will be put in a league table of points to determine who is no. 1 for the calendar year.
