Assume all quantities going up as positive. Summation of vertical forces on the system (car) should result into an acceleration of 0.80 m/s^2.

+ Tension - Weight = (mass car) (acc car)

Tension is positive because it is going up. Weight is negative because it is going down.

+Tension - 1200 (9.8) = 1200 (+0.80)

0.80 is positive because it is going up.

So you can now compute for tension.

The force that the rope must withstand are cause of two forces.
1. the force produce by accelerating it upward
2. the weight of the car.

T = m (a+g)
= 1200kg(.8+9.81m/s^2)
T = 12732 N

The net force is 1200*0.8 = 960 Newton upwards.
The gravity os 9.8*1200=11760 Newton downwards.
Since net force = tension+gravity (in this case tension-gravity because the dierctions are opposite), the tension is 960+11760=12740 N.

Use f = ma again.
but this time the force (f) on the left side will have two forces.
the force of gravity and the force from tension
